Zechariah 9:9-10; NKJV
9 "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your King is coming to you;
He is just and having salvation,
Lowly and riding on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.
10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim
And the horse from Jerusalem;
The battle bow shall be cut off.
He shall speak peace to the nations;
His dominion shall be 'from sea to sea,
And from the River to the ends of the earth.
The coming King would be a humble king who would identify with the common people. He would not be a warrior king riding a white horse. He would be riding a donkey, a service animal associated with peace, gentleness and humility. He would be the opposite of earthly kings. The donkey would symbolize His personal character and the character of His rule.
See the King of Zechariah 9:9-10 come in Matthew 21:1-11. See His "non-triumph" entry into Jerusalem. See Him as the sacrifice, willing to surrender His power and pour out His very life to bring salvation to others.
